How to Choose the Perfect Outfit for Your Solo Portrait Session

As a portrait session approaches and you are thinking of dressing for success, one question often takes focus: “What should I wear?”

Your outfit can significantly influence the mood and style of your portrait, so picking the right ensemble is key to creating a photo you’ll like.

Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect attire for your solo portrait session with Lewis Photography:

Reflect Your Personality: Your outfit should be a reflection of who you are. If you’re bubbly and outgoing, bright colors or bold patterns might suit you. If you’re more reserved or prefer a timeless look, consider classic styles or neutral tones. Remember, your portrait is a snapshot of you at this moment in time, and you should dig into that for a portrait.

Comfort is Key: You want to look great, but comfort should be a priority. Uncomfortable clothing can show in your posture and facial expressions, affecting the overall quality of your portrait. This really matters when it comes to footware – bring a backup pair if you also bring something crazy. Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and at ease.

Interacting with the Environment: Think about the location of your shoot. If it’s outdoors, like the nature paths of Whitemud Creek or the River Valley, choose bright colors that complement the setting. For indoor sessions, such as our cozy studio setups, opt for colors that contrast well with the background and help define your edges.

Avoid Logos and Text: You don’t want to be a commercial for your shirt brand or hat company. Try to pick minimal large logos and text, unless that is what you are going for! When in doubt, a solid colour is always a good choice.

Consider Multiple Outfits: Can’t decide on just one look? Bring multiple options! A change of outfit can offer a variety of looks for your session, from casual to formal. It’s always better to have choices! If the session starts to feel slow, or its too windy for a skirt, we can always make a change.

Your outfit plays a pivotal role in capturing the essence of your personality and making sure you are dressing for success. Whether you choose something bold and vibrant or subtle and sophisticated, ensure it’s a true representation of you. And remember, our goal at Lewis Photography is to create a comfortable, enjoyable session that captures your unique style – for you, no pressure.
